You are to write a reflection on the process and outcome of this project. It should be well written and should be thorough in content.

The following are some ideas and questions to touch on or think about as you write your reflection. You do not have to answer every question, but let them be a diving board to explore the last two months and the work you have put in.

Discuss where your ideas came from and how they changed. Are you happy with your decisions? Are there some things you are not content with? What are those and why? Which square is your favorite? which is the least favorite? Why? Where did you struggle the most? What did you do to overcome the struggle or what finally helped you push forward?

Compare and contrast your squares; past and future, what is similiar what is different? Inside and Outside; is there a difference in what you were trying to express here? Does it feel like 2 different people or the same? Were you surprised when you heard what others thought of you?

Discuss the symbolism you used throughout your work. What symbols were the strongest for you? How did you use symbols to express yourself? Are they clear or obscure?

Were you honest with your content and your expression in each square? Was it hard or easy to express yourself visually? Why? If you would like to explain what you were trying to express in one or more of your squares you may, although, you do not have to.

Visually what do you like about your quilts? What do you think is/are the strongest part(s) of your quilt?

What new tools did you use? What tools did you get better at? What was your favorite trick or tool to use through out your squares?

Overall describe your experience. What would you do different next time? What would you keep the same?

This will be written in essay form. 3-5 paragraphs. This means that you will have an introduction and a concluding paragraph. I suggest writing it in a word document and the copy and pasting it into blogger.

In your first paragraph I want you to begin with description. In artistic words I want you to describe your Artwork. Describe the layout, the colors, and what is in the picture(s). Be thorough.

In your second paragraph I want you to INTERPRET. Interpret what the issue is. Explain the message your statement and picture present. I want you to relate this issue to your life. Reflect upon how it effects you, or the people around you. Talk about what this issue means to you.

You are going to give a formal critique of this artwork by following the four steps:

Describe, Analyze, Interpret, and Judge

Do NOT title each paragraph. They do not even need to be in 4 separate paragraphs. Just make sure that you fulfill each step. They may intertwine, you may describe while interpreting and interpret while you analyze. Just make sure you do each.

I want you to get to know this artwork. I want you to communicate with it.

DESCRIBE: artistically creatively and with as much poetic detail as possible what you see. Assume the person you are describing it to cannot see the picture, but you want to describe it so well it is as if they were looking at it.

ANALYZE: continue with your poetic vernacular as you analyze the piece. Analysis is breaking down the image into pieces and talking about how they work together. This is where you talk about the composition. Remember we have worked a lot with "compositional tricks" Think about the emphasis. Is there an Emphasis? How did the artist make the emphasis stand out. What did the artist do, or use to move your eye through the picture. (etc)

INTERPRET: now is the time for you to interpret the artwork. What do you think the artist is saying? When you interpret art you can go about it in different ways. Look inside yourself, at your own opinions at your own experiences, what do you think, based on your life experiences and emotions, what do you think the artist is saying? Or, pretend to be everyone, pretend to be one of the masses, what might the artist be trying to say? You have to be able to validate your opinion by citing the work.

For example if I were interpreting an imaginary landscape picture and I said, "this picture depicts happiness" I would ask you, how does it show happiness? So instead you might say, "This picture is flooded with happiness through the bright yellows, the joyful flowers that reach their heads up to the sky. The artist shows his love for nature with the blissful, bright, bold colors he chose to paint with"

Back up your interpretations. Look deeply. The deeper you look the more powerful the connection between you and the artwork will become.

JUDGE: finally you give your overall opinion of the artwork. You do not have to like it. However you do have to state why you think the way you do. If you say, "The artist did a good job." What did the artist do a good job with? If you say, "This work has no value to anyone" Thats fine as long as you can give a clear reason. We do not use slang words, we don't say, cool or suck... we use educated words so that our opinions are taken seriously.
